Responsible Production Practices
Our bees come first. Here's how we ensure ethical, sustainable honey production.
Our Ethical Foundation
At Urban Vertical Beekeeping & Honey Innovation Lab, every decision we make starts with the health and wellbeing of our bee colonies. Responsible production isn't a marketing claim — it's the core of our practice.
Bee-First Harvesting
We never take more than the bees can spare. Before each harvest, we assess colony stores and only extract surplus honey, ensuring every hive retains sufficient reserves for the season ahead. In lean years, we reduce or skip harvests entirely — the bees' needs always come first.
Chemical-Free Management
Our hives are managed entirely without synthetic pesticides, miticides, or antibiotics. We use integrated pest management (IPM) techniques including screened bottom boards, drone comb trapping, organic acid treatments for varroa when necessary, and breeding for hygienic behavior traits.
Sustainable Materials
Our vertical hive towers are constructed from sustainably sourced cedar and recycled materials. We use natural beeswax foundation or foundationless frames, and all packaging is recyclable or compostable. Glass jars are sourced from a zero-waste manufacturer.
Urban Biodiversity
We actively invest in the environments our bees depend on. This includes planting pollinator gardens on partner rooftops, funding urban tree planting initiatives, and consulting with city planners on pesticide-free green space management. Our goal is to leave every neighborhood more biodiverse than we found it.
Colony Health Monitoring
Each hive is equipped with temperature and humidity sensors, and inspected on a regular two-week schedule during active season. We track colony health metrics, queen performance, and forage quality. Our 97% colony survival rate — far above the national average — reflects the effectiveness of this approach.
Fair Labor Practices
All team members receive living wages, comprehensive benefits, and ongoing professional development. Our apprenticeship program provides paid training opportunities for underrepresented communities interested in urban agriculture and environmental science.
Transparency
We publish annual impact reports detailing our colony numbers, harvest quantities, biodiversity metrics, and community partnerships. We welcome visitors to our apiaries during scheduled open days and workshops. Transparency builds trust, and trust is the foundation of responsible production.
Continuous Improvement
Our Innovation Lab continuously researches better practices. We collaborate with university entomology departments, participate in citizen science projects, and share our findings openly with the beekeeping community. We are always learning, always improving.
